CHAPTER FOURTEEN

I HEARD THE back door open and close, followed by Kate’s voice as she called out to me. “Jess? What the heck is going on? Freddie said some guy is dead.” Kate walked into the living room, her dark hair up in a long ponytail. She was still wearing her scrubs from work, and she looked exhausted.

I cut to the chase. “I need to get the medical examiner out here to deal with a body,” I said, hitching my thumb over my shoulder in no particular direction. And sounding a lot cooler than I felt.

Kate was already searching for the right number on her phone. “That would be Sara Benson. She is the lead doctor at the hospital now, and she is the Mistletoe County medical examiner, too. She will know what to do.”

Sara Benson? I remembered her as a freckled little girl, wearing a plastic princess crown and playing under the tablecloth at the Benson house next door. It wasn’t really that surprising that in a small community like Pine Grove, someone like Sara would still be around.

“Great, I said. “Can you get her over here right away?” I wanted to get this all over with. This entire night was feeling surreal, and I needed to get some sleep and wake up to a new day where nobody was lying dead anywhere.

Sara was a few years younger than me, in her mid-thirties. She had angular features that gave her face a serious look, and as she walked toward us, I saw that the jacket she wore read Mistletoe County Medical Examiner on the front.

She placed her hands on her hips and looked at Kate. “Hey. I came as quick as I could. Who is dead now?”

I didn’t know if Sara had recognized me or not. “Hi Sara, I’m Jess Braun. That would be my mom’s boyfriend. They came to visit, and he wandered off last night, saying something about finding some mushrooms to eat. When he didn’t come back, we took Sheriff out to find him…” I didn’t need to finish the story—she knew the ending.

She nodded at me. “Good to see you again, Jess, though not under the best of circumstances. I’m sorry to hear about your, uh, whoever he was. Now, where did you say he is?” She was looking around the yard, illuminated by the porch light, as though she thought she might see a corpse right there.

Freddie came out of the house and joined us in the yard. She looked like she
